The firm originated from the nationwide practice of Labuschagne, Law, Kennedy & du Toit which opened a branch office in Port Elizabeth under Mr Bob Law in January 1951. On the dissolution of that partnership in 1962 the practice continued for 37 years under the title of Law Hepple & Ayton under the control of Bob Law, Ray Hepple and John Ayton. In 1999 the Law Hepple & Ayton partnership was dissolved and reconstituted under its present title of Hepple & Robertson.
